My Thoughts on WrestleMania 23
March 28, 2008 – 1:38 pmAlright I’m a bit late on this and for those of you who are fans know what happen. But anyways here is what I thought about the show. Overall it was a good show. They did a better job of selling the show this year and more time for build up for each match. Some of the matches really shocked the hell out of me. Some more then others.
Money in the Bank Ladder Match
This was a really good match. The winner of the match was Mr. Kennedy who I knew was going to win going into the match as they have been pushing him to become champion for months now. They also gave a great push for CM Punk as he was one of the last men standard at the end. I see him getting a push for the ECW title soon. Anyways, I knew about Edge’s jaw injury for a while now. To why he hasn’t really been in any matches as of late. I was wondering how they where going to pull it off and then he gets smash threw a ladder by Jeff hardy. The ending of the match was fantastic and now looknig back, it was a great opening match for WrestleMania 23, at the time I thought either the Diva match or the MVP vs Benoit match was going to take place first.
ECW Originals vs the New Breed
I didn’t go into this match looking for anything big to happen because I’m not a fan of ECW so the whole storyline of what was going on was new to me. From what I gather it comes form Mr. McMahon saying the old ECW was dead and how he was going to do this and that. Overall the match was good. A bit short and less hardcore then you would think it would be. I was hoping they bring a level of what ECW was to the match. Didn’t really do much for me, wasn’t a bad match. For being ECW it was very good and just another reason why ECW is here to stay. This one end with ECW Originals winning.
United States Champion Chris Benoit vs MVP
Okay let just say it out front. I’ve seen MVP and I really didn’t like him at all. I saw the Kane match ups and he just doesn’t look like he can be anything then mid card to opening match status. However when I heard about this match I thought, “Benoit is going to kick his ass”. Boy was I wrong. I know everyone going to hate on me for this, but this was a great match. I had no idea MVP had it in him. I mean damn, he really make me believe and even know I kind of wish he had beat Benoit as it would have push him over big time, but sadly because he hasn’t shown such skill in the ring until now, the crowd wasn’t really into this match so it end up with Benoit winning. But I have to give it up to MVP for giving his best and I hope he keeps going down on this path on Smackdown.
The Great Khali vs Kane
This is like last year with Taker vs Mark Henry or Brock vs Goldberg in terms of lame matches with big guys who can’t wrestle worth of damn. Taker is the only one who can. Anyways Kane and The Great Khali match was a little shocking. I watch it, and did enjoy it. I thought it end a bit too soon as they both where going at it, the only thing I thought was really cool was the play off of this being 20 years since WrestleMaina 3 where Hogan slammed Andre the Giant , 20 years later we have the The Great Khali getting slamed by Kane. I think deep down this match was only booked for that factor, but The Great Khali wins.
World Heavyweight Championship
The highlight of the night. Like the rest of you I was waiting and hoping for Taker to kick Batista’s ass. Grant that Batista has had some great matches, but the way he acts since coming back and with every match he’s had being force to be carried makes one sick. I hope preying Taker wouldn’t have to carry Batista here. I was lucky and both men work there ass off and the match turn out great. Finally we see the old Batista in the Batista who doesn’t need to be carried. They pull out all the stops in this match and it really got you into it.
If you doubt that Understaker was going to win then you should be slapped. No really, 15-0 and now World Heavyweight Champion isn’t a laughing matter. In fact the match wouldn’t have turn out better. I can see Batista turning heel now as I think he’s been done with the good guy act now for a while now. He was force to go threw winning the title back due to having to after giving it up last year. Once he finally was given it back threw King Booker I thought who would hold it longer then he did, Batista was just on the path to meet the his end as champion. Sorry Batista fans, but its the Deadman’s time now. I just hope it last a worth while time.
Battle of the Billionaires
Okay this match was lame, I really didn’t like it at all. The whole set up of it was well stupid and didn’t really draw me in at all. Too many things about it was just not doing it for me. For one Mr. McMahon vs Donald Trump in a hair vs hair match. Okay no way in hell was Donald Trump going to lose this and get his head shave on PayPerView. If that was to be the outcome he wouldn’t have sign on to do it. Now it was only a matter of how he would win and Mr. McMahon get his head shave. Lets face it, Mr. McMahon would did this for the fans.
So we have ECW World Champion Bobby Lashley for Trump and Intercontinental Champion Umaga for McMahon. Okay, the only thing that made this match worth watching was they put Stone Cold in as special guest referee and well I saw that coming as it would be a perfect way to promote his new movie coming out. What? So as you can see I wasn’t too happy about this match, only seeing Stone Cold piss off Umaga, and basically kick shit out of the McMahon’s, Vince getting his head shave and a half ass Stunner to Trump. Which I was preying to see.
Womens Championship
This was by far the worst match of the night and having to happen so late really took the show down. The only plus I was it was short. We had all these Divas out there and they did nothing with it but show how Ashley can’t wrestle and Melina is just a cry baby. Melina wins hands down, nuff said.
WWE Champion John Cena vs Shawn Michaels
There has been lot of buzz about this match and reports about it. Let me get right too it. Cena wins with the STFU in the middle of the ring making Shawn tap out. Now in my opinion, Shawn like aways carried this match. The fans where on his side, as you could hear it every time he land a hit you heard cheers and when he was hit by Cena, boos heard.
Don’t get me wrong Cena is a great money maker and he was great when they let him trash talk with his raps but as of the last year they have been capping him down to a water down version of what he use to be. That’s why so many people hate on him now. Anyways the match had some problems. One of the biggest was Cena’s Leg injury which was play out by Shawn at the start and once Cena took control it magically disappear. This left to rumors about Shawn getting pissed off backstage after the match. From what I heard its not true. I wouldn’t been shocked however as Cena should have play it off better then he did.
Overall it was a great show and better then last years. I have to say I can’t wait to see the aftermath in the falling weeks and my only prey for WrestleMaina 24 is Cena isn’t champion. Hell the only way I see them pulling him away from any title run is by having him get hurt and out of action for a year.
