Interview with DaCoolGohan
October 19, 2007 – 1:44 pmHello, today we took the time to interview Anime Music Video Editor, DaCoolGohan in a first of many weekly features in the new Road to the Fight Club Feature. The following interview is uncut, it has not been edited.
Neckar Unrivaled: What was your first music video and what can you tell me about it, such as why you made it, music used, anime, etc?
DaCoolGohan: my first AMV was probably fuck I cant remember
DCG: what my first one was
DCG: that was like
DCG: 7 years ago
DCG: umm
DCG: prob
DCG: fuck
DCG: the first one I can remember
DCG: is Trunks to Adam Song
DCG: from Trunks Special
DCG: that I can actually remember the sources
DCG: I know I had a ton before
DCG: like ones to Adema with random DBZ
DCG: do u mean the first one I released
NU: well generally speaking the first one you officially released
NU: or the one you can remember about, such as the one that started you on your career of making music vidoes
DCG: one that started me would be
DCG: DBZ to Limp Bizkit Break Stuff but I didnt make it
DCG: my Eva to No Brakes by Offspring and my Trunks to Adams Song
DCG: were the ones that wanted to make me keep going though
DCG: since those are the first ones I remember
DCG: from like 01
DCG: like all the sources
DCG: from
DCG: that made me want to stick
NU: When you decided to make your first video did you think you come as far as you have?
DCG: no I didnt even know there was a big community, I didn’t even find out about AMV.org until about 3 months after I started editing wtih Premiere
DCG: and it was still only about a year old
DCG: so I didnt have a clue how far id go
DCG: and now I look back
DCG: and editors I thought were amazing I am now at least as good as technically
DCG: and am on their same level
DCG: but shit I had only had a pc
DCG: for 2 years
DCG: when I started editing
DCG: so it was all new to me
NU: What was your worst music video you’ve every made and released? Also what was the reasons for releasing it even know you knew it was bad?
DCG: Id have to say
DCG: This Is Not by StaticX to Evangelion
DCG: there was barely any timing
DCG: the footage skipped a lot
DCG: and a lot of scenes didnt make sense at all
DCG: I released it because I was in love with eva
DCG: and static x
DCG: and didnt really care
DCG: just thought it was cool
DCG: like any nub
NU: Have you ever thought about becoming a professional editor?
DCG: yeah many times, actually is waht Im pursuing in my college education trying to get a BFA in Electronic Media from The College Conservatory of Music at The University of Cincinnati
DCG: editing as well as production
DCG: really want to get into Movies
DCG: or Television
NU: How many fight club matches have you enter in the past?
DCG: a total of 4 different fight clubs
DCG: first one was against Bote
DCG: I got the the last round
DCG: and War of Wrath beat Take My Pain Away
DCG: 2nd was against Turankusu
DCG: in teh final round
DCG: cant rememberwhat won
DCG: 3rd was against Fuze
DCG: Collapse lost to How To Save A Life
DCG: and the 4th was when I won against Niwa-Kun’s Whispers in the dark
DCG: with Let Mercy Come
NU: How did it feel to win your first Fight Club match?
DCG: kind of lack-luster, I mean I finally won but the competition is really what gets me. I win thats cool but I get to compete and see what most of the public, at least on the site, likes and to see something I create be enjoyed by others is really a cool feeling
DCG: thats the whole point of competing
DCG: to see who likes your work
NU: Do you plan on entering the 2008 Fight Club?
DCG: yes, as long as FC will keep taking my videos I will keep entering
NU: After the 2007 Fight Club’s where done, being that there was two of them. How did you feel about the overall outcome of them toward past Fight Clubs?
DCG: u know fight club was always this sort of once a year thing before if i recall correctly and so a lot more hype was there but when it started slacking off and some of the ppl that made it popular retired it became a little less competitive and wins were asusured almost till the end, the first FC of 07 was definitely more down to the nose who won it came down to 1 vote sealing the deal while with the 2nd one there werent as many good videos in it that competed the whole time and in the end it was a clear cut match it wasnt a matter of 1 vote
DCG: so it just seemed less exciting
DCG: and made me more willing to want it only once a year
NU: When you entered the Fight Club, what was your overall goals?
DCG: to win
DCG: but the win wasnt as much fun as losing
DCG: the other 3 times
NU: Has there ever been a Match against someone, let it be the first match or the final round, that you thought you would lose but end up winning?
DCG: honestly I never think Ill win anything
DCG: I hate to be cocky about my editing ability
DCG: and so I always expect to lose and hope to win
DCG: and then Im surprised when I win
NU: Which Fight Club would you say was the best you have ever seen/been apart of?
DCG: The winter FC of 2007
DCG: definitely the most down to the wire FC
DCG: Ive ever seen
DCG: and even in the end
DCG: it was just 1 person voting
DCG: taht sealed the deal
NU: Are you working on any new projects and what can you tell me about them?
DCG: many new ones actually
DCG: id say a total of 4 projects 1 project having 2 amvs it is one for a band called Days in which I am editing two of their songs back to back that will be two AMVs released as one when tis finished. Working on another project that has Gungrave and is set to Fall Into Sleep by Mudvayne, which is about 1/4th done. Another video that is Street Fighter Alpha set to Prayer of the Refugee by Rise Against which is about 1/3 done. Another Video that I had abondoned for a while that I am planning on finishin that is the movie Crank set to New Noise by Refused that is about 2/5th done
DCG: Yeah it seems I haven’t stuck to the 1 video a month rule that I said I would during the beginning months of 07 but mostly because of the many projects I am trying to do at once. Eventually though I will release 2 videos or 3 videos in one month so it will end up evening out. The end of the summer was just a lot more eventful now that I am living on campus at College and makes for a little bit less decompressed time when I can actually brainstorm for ideas on an AMV. Usually that is the only way I get them done quickly, when Im sitting around and I get a bunch of ideas all at once and have time in the next week to keep sitting down to edit so it set me back a bit plus the Iron Chef tournament is going on so I have released a couple vids in the last 2 months but aren’t truely fully vids that you expect from me.
NU: Do you have anything to say to your fans who might be reading this?
DCG: So just be patient for now and you will see most if not all of these projects finished and more projects to come in late 07 or early 08
NU: Thank you for taking the time to have this interview and we do look forward to seeing what you got new for us in the coming months.
