The Number 23 (2007)

February 24, 2007 – 1:37 pm

“The Perfect number for this game.” The movie number 23 is a new, very interesting movie that will drive u insane.

Jim Carrey plays as the main character known as Walter Sparrow. Yes people, Jim Carrey is still funny but will be able to see a very serious side of him without losing any of his amazing acting talent. But Back to the movie. Walter Sparrow, who works in animal control, receives a book for his birthday entitled “The Number 23″ as a gift from his wife, Agatha Sparrow played by Virginia Madsen, as if destiny had chosen her to pick the book as if either by coincidence or destiny.. As he begins to read this book he feels deeply related to the main character of the story in his book. To the point that many things about the book’s character’s past highly relate to his. This is what quickly catches his attention about the book and makes him want to keep reading it more and more.

As he reads in the book, a kind of biography but fictional story about a detective who in a case meets a young woman who has become insane because of the fact that everything she sees has some matter to become or relate to the number 23, the detective and Walter become equally obsessed with the number and cannot escape from it’s presence. From telephone numbers, social security numbers, dates, colors, etc. If you wonder about the colors it has something o do with the percent of colors used to make a color. In this case pink. Pink has a given amount of red, white, etc that create the color pink. The addition of those numbers make 94 which divided by 4, because of the number of letters in the word pink, make… you guessed it, 23. Everything he sees becomes the number and everything that is occurring to the detective is occurring to poor Walter.

Soon, exactly as the detective, he starts to have nightmares about killing his wife among other haunting things. Scared about this he is on the search to find the meaning of the number by searching everywhere for an answer and for the author of the story, which has not published anything before or after that book. His obsession continues to ruin his life and that of his family. He searches with the help of his son, and later on, his wife and a professor who is a friend of his wife, which he is suspecting her of having an affair with because in his book, the detective’s girlfriend cheated on him with a professor and caused the detective to kill her. Because of the high relationship between the book and his life occurrences he fears he shall end up killing them and will go insane with the number’s curse. In heir search they find much more questions than they do answers, and the few they find just create more questions. They also manage to find others who have been affected by the book and the number and when they find a case in real life related to that of they book, they go even deeper on the hunt for the relationship between it and the book.

The movie will keep you trying to guess the next move and make you create your own speculations about everything. Plus it manages to keep you constantly guessing and on the edge of your seat with at least two mayor twists in the movie, among other minor but still as good to keep the suspense in swirling in the theater. It is a great combination of Jim Carrey’s comedy, in small portions of course given the theme, while adding the great mystery and thrill of the movie. It is a great movie to watch as it brings a much needed spice to movies both current and coming with it’s detective style and addicting theme. Believe me when I say this, from beginning to end, hell even before the actual movie starts and way after you finish seeing it, you too will be getting your geek on and finding the number 23 in every thing you can. And any movie that keeps you thinking about it as long as this one can is proof of just how good it is.

“The number 23 is the perfect number for this game” “So is it a curse or a blessing?” who knows… You be the judge.
