Dragonball Z The Dead Zone, The Best DBZ Movie
July 3, 2006 – 12:19 pmThe first of 13 movies in the Dragonball Z Saga, Dragonball Z The Dead Zone as it’s known here in American. In Japan and other parts of the world it’s know as Return My Gohan. Basically we begin our story with a evil being know as Garlic Jr. He seeks the seven DragonBall’s in order to wish for immortality and to take the throne of Kami (god of earth) for taking the thrown from his father Garlic. Goku and the gang, more so put Piccolo, Krillin, Gohan and Goku, get mixed up when Garlic Jr’s men take Gohan as he has a Dragonball on his hat. It then becomes a race against time as Goku with Piccolo must now stop Garlic Jr and his newly wished immortality.
While the animation in the movie was not as good as the regular episodes, it’s still outstanding. Threw out the movie there are many great animated scenes, such as the final fight when Garlic Jr opens a black hold or dead zone as it’s called in America. This is the first time we get to see Gohan’s hidden power in action to what his power will become in the future. One of the best scenes is when Gohan ate the Hallucinogenic fruit, and started to see all those different creatures.
The dialogue in the movie was pretty decent for this being a dub version. However like with the episodes, it’s nowhere near as good. For the most part to many grunts and moaning which only make it very stupid when normally someone would not do such things, even for anime. Being how the voices are of the first cast of voices from the Ocean Group which is not the voices many know of as they only dub the voices for the first 3 movies and first 2 seasons of the series. Garlic Jr had a great voice and for me, was one of the shining parts of the whole thing as far as it comes to the dialogue. The voice of the Eternal Dragon was like always, but a little lacking as to other summons in the series and the other movies.
For this being a voice dub only movie, all the Japanese music is as is, which makes the movie that much better from the new updated uncut version released. Each song worked well with in the movie and what made the movie for the most part. It just went so great with scene, matching the intensity, the drama, and the happiness at each twist and turn in the movie. today in most anime movies such as it’s been in all of Dragonball Z and the movies the music has been dub over with Metal or other forms of rap music. Which I have nothing against that kind of music, but I don’t understand why they had to make such chances. To why I decided to do a review on the older dub and not the new uncut one.
As far as the story goes, it like all other Dragonball Z movies, someone wants the Dragonball’s, Gohan gets mixed up and Goku has to come save him. Unlike the others, in this one Piccolo is a bad guy/good guy. Which I thought was a great twist to add to the movie after Goku and Piccolo think they bear Garlic Jr, Piccolo attacks Goku. Sadly this gave time for Garlic Jr to open the dead zone and pull everything inside it. But now you have just pissed Gohan off, and as we know; you don’t piss Gohan off as bad things can happen which makes for super killer transformation scenes or power ups. As you know Gohan kicks Garlic Jr’s butt and he never even throws a punch the whole movie.
Finally what I can say about the movie is that its a must see. If your lucky you can still order the dub version online or at your local video story. If your looking for the uncut I would get the Japanese version and skip the new uncut one. I have not fully seen it but I have heard that even know it is fully uncut but they music has changed like the series. I totally recommend this one to any fan of Dragonball Z.
